Development of the metrological network needed to realise and implement 6G technology

For Europe, gaining technological independence from Asian countries and the USA in areas such as wireless technologies, semiconductor research and artificial intelligence is of great importance for economical needs as well as ensuring sovereignty and security in critical technologies and systems.
In the area of telecommunications, Europe is launching the 6G network in the 2030’s but this requires significant improvements of the metrological network to ensure 6G specifications are supported. Specifically, the traceability of waveform and radio frequency (RF) power measurements needs to be established for 6G frequencies (> 200 GHz). Frequency limitations of existing linearity/attenuation characterisation methodologies and standards need to be overcome and modernised to support 6G technology.

This project aims to characterise new primary standards for RF power calibrations in a waveguide band of 140 – 220 GHz and new transfer power standards up to 220 GHz. To meet requirements New primary coaxial standards for measurements up to 150 GHz and 220 GHz will be developed as well as extending the standard operating frequency limits for established coaxial connectors. Additionally, project partners will work on gaining insight in new power sensor technologies for very high and low frequencies. The primary electro-optical standard for the characterisation of waveforms up to 145 GHz will be extended to be suitable for 6G technology. Project results will be submitted to various standards developing organisations, such as IEC TC46 and IEEE P287. Overall, these advancements will allow Europe to take up a leadership position within the global telecommunication industry.
