EMN for Radiation Protection

Everyone in the world is exposed to environmental radiation - and more than 23 million people around the world are exposed to ionising radiation in the workplace alone.
To better protect European citizens, the EU’s radiation protection regulations have become increasingly more sophisticated.
Innovative technological developments can comprise new radiation exposure scenarios. Measures to respond to these new needs include increasingly restrictive exposure limits, the introduction of reference values for activity concentration, and enhanced quality assurance requirements for legal dose assessment.
The European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection responds to these developments and aims to act as a single point of contact to cover the metrological requirements related to radiation protection.
To enable quality assurance in the area, the network will foster a harmonised, sustainable, coordinated and smartly specialised infrastructure to underpin the needs expressed by stakeholders and in the European regulations for radiation protection.
A special focus of the EMN will be the cooperation with regulators to actively contribute to the generation of new and to the revision of existing standards.
An initial plan for ensuring the sustainability and collaborative nature of the European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection has been developed and can be found on the website of the related joint network project supportBSS >>.
