EMN for Smart Electricity Grids successfully interacts with stakeholders
The European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids will strengthen Europe’s measurement infrastructure to support smart grids
Europe’s electricity distribution network is changing with the increased introduction of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. EURAMET supported the formation of a European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids (EMN Smart Grids), which acts as a single point of contact to provide stakeholder support and high-level strategic coordination to ensure a coherent approach regarding the development of needed metrological frameworks.
The EMPIR project Support for a European Metrology Network on smart electricity grids (18NET03, SEG-Net) successfully supported the development of the EMN Smart Grids and thus raise the profile of smart grid technology in Europe.
The project consortium took part in several dissemination activities to introduce the EMN Smart Grids to the relevant stakeholder groups and publicise their strategies, including:
- In May 2023, the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) was published, detailing 5 to 10 year visions for smart electricity grids in Europe that address stakeholder needs. Additionally, roadmaps detailing the implementation strategies for the nine core themes (revenue metering, grid monitoring and data analytics, power quality, digital substations, instrument transformers and sensors, high-voltage testing, DC grid and application, efficiency, and grid integration) were included.
- In May/June 2022, an excellence course on Smart Grid metrology was held in collaboration with INRIM and the Politecnico di Torino University. 80 participants were able to deepen their knowledge over the course of 25 training hours led by EMN Smart Grids experts.
- At the Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements 2022 in Wellington, New Zealand, project partners held a special session titles “Energy and Smart Grids” that focused on stakeholder needs in smart grid metrology research.
- At the 21st International Metrology Congress CIM in Lyon, France the EMN Smart Grids participated in a joint booth for EURAMET EMNs.
- At the International Conference on Smart Grid Metrology 2023 in Cavtat, Croatia, EMN Smart Grids representatives held an opening key-note presentation and publicised the EMN’s SRA and future objectives.
The project coordinator Gert Rietveld (VSL) comments on the successful dissemination activities:
“The smart electricity grid stakeholders are at the core of our EMN activities, and we are very pleased that over the three years of our 18NET03 SEG-net project we have had such extensive interaction with our stakeholder community. The strong support that we for example received from our stakeholders in development of our Strategic Research Agenda confirmed the added value that the smart grid metrology community can provide in supporting the energy transition”
This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
