Developing the metrological network to support the use of Digital-Metrological Twins in Advanced Manufacturing


Advanced manufacturing uses state-of-the-art production and design techniques to allow the fabrication of products with complex freeform geometries. Currently, the measurement uncertainty and quality control are determined with simulation-based methods using Digital-Metrological Twins (D-MTs), however this is not sufficient for freeform geometries. There is a metrological need for fast and contactless measurements in industrial quality control using optical sensors to support advanced manufacturing processes. The EU is aiming to make the 2020’s ‘Europe’s Digital Decade’ and further improving the metrological network for advanced manufacturing will support ‘Europe’s Digital Strategy’. Additionally, these goals also align with the United Nation’s sustainable development goals for ‘Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure’.

 

This project aims to validate D-MTs for at least three optical sensor and freeform measurements, and additionally one freeform measurement standard for parameterisation of D-MTs will be developed. In order to fulfil these objectives, the project will start by developing reliable model descriptions and accurate mathematical models for use in D-MTs, as well as establishing traceable parameterisation methods for measurement uncertainty evaluations. Good practice guides will be prepared to give guidance on the use and parametrisation of D-MTs for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and multi-axis tools (MTs). The project also aims to support the formation of self-sustaining and long-standing working groups to ensure D-MTs in advanced manufacturing will continually be developed and improved. Results are anticipated to impact a range of advanced manufacturing sectors, and support Europe in its digital strategy.
