New EURAMET Traceability in Laboratory Medicine EMN to give talk at CIM 2019

International Metrology Congress: 24 – 26 September 2019, Paris, France

Presentation at CIM 2019

David Auerbach, from the European Metrology Network for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine will give a talk at the Metrology for Healthcare session of the International Metrology Congress (CIM 2019). The talk entitled ‘Traceability in laboratory medicine: a European metrology network’ will be given on the afternoon of the first day of the conference, Tuesday 24 September. The presentation will introduce the EMN TraceLabMed to the broader metrology community and provides an overview of the strategy and planned activities.

EMN for traceability in laboratory medicine

The European network for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine (TraceLabMed) was established to build a coordinated metrology-based quality infrastructure in an area that affects almost every European citizen.

Laboratory testing is at the heart of modern health care: an estimated 70% of medical decisions depend on in vitro diagnostics (IVDs). Benefits for patients, healthcare providers and the IVD industry are improved when robust and metrologically traceable IVDs are used to provide accurate test results irrespective of the laboratory, the IVD provider, or the instrumentation used for testing.

Metrological traceability of IVDs enhances validity of diagnosis, supports further treatment, and lowers the financial burden on healthcare systems by avoiding non-essential testing. Traceability is also an important aspect of regulatory schemes: IVD manufacturers need to comply with legal requirements for traceability to gain and maintain market access.

The EMN chair, Reiner Stosch stated, “"We want to foster the provision of metrological traceability for in-vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDs) as required by law throughout Europe. One of the major aims of the EMN is to establish a coordinated and service-oriented European metrology infrastructure. However, this will not be possible without the support of international key stakeholders in this area".

The work of this European network will contribute to improved patient safety, support the European IVD industry to meet regulatory requirements, and align European activities with global challenges.

CIM 2019 conference

The 19th International Metrology Congress is a unique crossroads between R&D and industrial applications. It covers a majority of fields including mechanics, health and biology, agro-food industry, environment, energy, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The congress deals with R&D and best practices for measurement and metrology in industry through the following approaches: a diversified conference programme and round tables sessions, an exhibition showcasing innovations and solutions, industrial site visits and demonstrations and professional networking opportunities during social events
