Louise Wright is new convenor of EURAMET's Digital Transformation working group

Louise Wright (NPL, United Kingdom) started her term as convenor of EURAMET’s Working Group (WG) on Metrology for Digital Transformation (M4D) at the Technical Committee for Interdisciplinary Metrology (TC-IM) annual meeting in March 2022.


Louise’s main area of expertise is the application of numerical techniques such as finite element methods, finite difference methods, boundary element methods and meshless methods to metrology problems from a wide range of areas of physics, including static and dynamic stress analysis, heat transfer and acoustics.

She has used these techniques in a variety of projects, recent examples being Hi-Trace (Hi-Trace), where she developed software to quantify thermal bond quality from laser flash thermal diffusivity measurements, and MIMAS (MIMAS - Project (ptb.de)), where she used finite element models to investigate the effects of perfusion on the temperature rise of medical implants when a patient undergoes an MRI scan.

She is also interested in methods of integrating measurement data into models to enable estimation and uncertainty evaluation for parameters and initial conditions. This task feeds into the concept of digital twin which uses a combination of data gathered throughout a system’s development and lifetime combined with a validated model  to deliver high accuracy predictions of system performance with associated uncertainty quantification.

 
Louise received a Master of Arts in Mathematics from Cambridge University in 1994, and a Master of Science in Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis from Oxford University in 1995. She spent the subsequent four years developing finite element solutions for industrial applications, before joining the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in 1999. Currently she is the Head of Science for Data Science and the Head of Digital Metrology at NPL. In these roles she is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the scientific research within this field, and for working with colleagues across NPL to ensure that metrology data can be delivered digitally and in a machine-actionable form.


Since 2021 Louise represents EURAMET on the European Open Science Cloud Task Force on Data Quality and FAIR Metrics, where she is promoting the use of traceability and quantified uncertainty as key aspects of data quality. She is also member of the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) Digitalisation Focus Group.


As the new convenor of the EURAMET working group Metrology for Digital Transformation, Louise is set to enable metrology to make the most of the benefits arising from digital transformation, and support the digital data users in profiting from the confidence in data quality that metrology brings.


Referring to the ongoing digital initiatives at the EURAMET level she commented:

“I am very excited about the opportunities that M4D provides for collaboration across metrology disciplines. Sascha Eichstädt, my predecessor, and the team have built some great relationships with the European Metrology Networks and end users of metrology data, and the work within the existing TC-IM projects has linked together the expertise across European National Metrology Institutes and Designated Institutes to generate some useful outputs. The 2022 Digital Transformation Call will help to increase the impact and range of this work, so we can develop digital approaches in collaboration with end users that enhance their science, engineering, and metrology.”


Starting from March 2022, Sascha Eichstädt (PTB, Germany) is officially handing over the baton to Louise. They intend to maintain a close collaboration and mutual support to ensure not only a smooth transition, but also the continuity of all encompassed activities.


EURAMET wishes Louise plenty of success in this new role and extends its sincere thanks to Sascha, who held the position from 2019 to 2021.
