Inauguration of EURAMET e.V.

The 11th of January 2007 is a memorable date for European metrology. On that day in Berlin 26 signatories signed the byelaws of EURAMET. With their signature EURAMET was born, a new legal entity to serve European metrology.More than 70 metrologists from 28 European countries and representatives of the European Commission gathered at PTB in Berlin for the founding ceremony. In the first part of the meeting the signatories created EURAMET by signing the byelaws and afterwards the first General Assembly of EURAMET was hold. After the adoption of the EURAMET Rules of Procedures the Chairperson and the Vice Chairperson were elected. The General Assembly was then suspended to allow for a first meeting of the EMRP Committee. This committee has the responsibility for the development and the execution of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) and the elected Chairperson of the EMRP Committee becomes the second Vice Chairperson of EURAMET. With the foundation of EURAMET and the election of the three Chairpersons the purpose of the ceremony was fulfilled and in the evening everybody gathered for the inauguration dinner to celebrate the event. The purpose of EURAMET is twofold: It will among other things negotiate a contract with the European Commission for an EMRP to be financed by participating countries and by the European Commission. Simultaneously it serves as a Regional Metrology Organisation representing the National Metrology Institutes of Europe.
