Enhanced temperature measurement techniques enable greater efficiency for manufacturing processes

Project '<link research-innovation search-research-projects details>Enhancing process efficiency through improved temperature measurement' (14IND04) has developed improved temperature measurement techniques for certain high value manufacturing processes such as hot forging.

This will result in enhanced efficiency from reduced wastage, improved yield, more consistent processing, increased intervals between sensor checks and maintenance, increased reliability, improved energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Specific facilities developed by the project consortium, and trialled in-process, include:

  • The Italian National Measurement Institute INRIM has extended the upper operating limit of its surface temperature reference system to provide traceable phosphor calibration to 450 °C
  • The UK National Measurement Institute NPL has finished construction of its surface calibrator to enable measurements up to 400 °C. They have also successfully demonstrated phosphor thermometry on industrial surfaces at round 100 °C, with the capability to measure up to 500 °C
  • The Czech National Measurement Institute CMI has developed a temperature probe that can be used with a range of different surfaces
