New project to enhance industrial process efficiency kicks off

EMPIR project 14IND04

The first project meeting of the new EMPIR project EMPRESS 'Enhancing process efficiency through improved temperature measurement' was held at NPL (UK) on 21 and 22 May 2015.

Most industrial processes need to be maintained at a specific temperature to maximise efficiency, and accurate control of temperature ensures process efficiency. The uncertainty of temperature measurement in high value manufacturing processes will be significantly reduced through the work of EMPRESS, which aims to develop new sensors which are less susceptible to calibration drift in-process, introduce traceability to the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) directly into processes, and develop novel calibration techniques.

EMPRESS both builds on the work of EMRP project IND01 HiTeMS and introduces a number of completely new research approaches. The consortium comprises 18 partners from the metrology community, high value manufacturing industry and academia, as well as around 10 further collaborators.
