EMPIR project coordinator to give opening plenary lecture at major conference

Graham Machin, project coordinator of ‘Realising the redefined kelvin’ invited to give opening plenary at the decennial International Temperature Symposium

The project

On 20 May 2019 the implementation phase of the redefinition of the international system of units (the SI) was completed and the new unit definitions came into force.

EMPIR project Realising the redefined kelvin (18SIB02, Real-K) is working to take the kelvin redefinition, and its associated mise-en-pratique (‘to put into practice’) and begin to turn it into a reality by:

  • developing primary thermometry techniques at high and low temperatures which can be used to realise and disseminate the redefined kelvin
  • performing research to ensure the on-going fitness of the current temperature scale the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90)
  • undertaking longer-term research for primary thermometry to be the basis of temperature traceability throughout the entire range.

ITS-10: International Temperature Symposium

The International Temperature Symposium (ITS-10) is the global premier conference for thermometry and will be held this year on 3 to 7 April 2023 in Anaheim California. Graham Machin (NPL), the coordinator of this EMPIR project has been invited to give the opening plenary lecture The James Schooley Invited Plenary Lecture on progress with realising the redefined kelvin. This 50 min lecture will be mainly based on work performed in the Real-K project.

In addition, the project coordinator has been invited to organise 2 focused conference sessions devoted to reporting the results from the ‘Real-K’ project. Real-K will make a major contribution to the conference with at least 10 presentations reporting results from the project.

Project coordinator Graham Machin from NPL said

‘The Real-K project will make a major contribution to realising the redefined kelvin in this decade and beyond. The outcomes of the project will provide essential underpinning metrology for the SI unit the kelvin, the foundation on which all reliable temperature measurement depends.’

This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
