Developing European metrology for new generation nuclear power

An article written by the JRP-Coordinator for ENG08, Lena Johansson, entitled ‘Developing European metrology for new generation nuclear power’ has been published in the Journal Nuclear Future.

EMRP project: ‘Metrology for New Generation Nuclear Power plants’ (ENG08 MetroFission), aims to address the measurement challenges posed by new ‘Generation IV’ nuclear reactor designs by testing temperature measurements and materials for suitability and ensuring sufficient nuclear data and radiation measurement techniques are available. The project will benefit the European nuclear energy industry and covers exciting new metrology and the key needs of the industry.

The article describes the results of JRP ENG08 in the development of measurement systems for Generation IV reactors and covers such topics as ‘Improved thermo-chemical data and modelling’, ‘Thermophysical properties of advanced materials’ and ‘Improved neutron cross-section measurements’. Nuclear Future is the journal of the Nuclear Institute and a respected, high profile publication, which is becoming an increasingly popular showcase for authors reporting on the latest developments in the nuclear industry.

The next step for JRP ENG08 is a JRP-Consortium meeting at the Advancements in Nuclear Instrumental Measurement Methods and their Applications (ANIMMA 2013) conference in Marseille in June, where the final results of the JRP will be presented.
