Advanced Manufacturing network publishes first Strategic Research Agenda
The European Metrology Network (EMN) for Advanced Manufacturing is delighted to announce the formal publication of the first issue of its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA).
Daniel O’Connor, the EMN Vice-Chair said:
“The coordinated research, development, and vertical integration of metrology solutions in Advanced Manufacturing supply chains as identified in the Strategic Research Agenda of the European Metrology Network for Advanced Manufacturing will enable the full exploitation of Key Enabling Technologies; drive sustainability and innovation across key industry sectors; and increase employment, prosperity, and overall quality of life in Europe and beyond.”
Advanced Manufacturing has been identified by the European Commission as one of six key enabling technologies (KETs), which drive innovation throughout the economy and cut across industries with the aim of creating advanced and sustainable economies.
The EMN for Advanced Manufacturing has developed the SRA in close collaboration with its stakeholders, identifying key metrology research challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed in order to drive innovation in advanced manufacturing in Europe.
The SRA has evolved in several stages incorporating content from questionnaires, open workshop and consultation events, and guidance from the Stakeholder Council. It is divided into four main sections: scene setting, cross cutting topics, stakeholder engagement and conclusions.
The main body of the SRA is concerned with challenges and opportunities, which have been aligned with respect to the cross-cutting topics (CCTs), which represent the manufacturing workflow. Metrology challenges that are either broadly applicable or specific to Key Industry Sectors (KIS) have been described for each CCT. The challenges and required capabilities have been detailed according to the timescale (Short term <3 years, Medium/Long term >3 years) over which they need to be solved.
The publication of the first issue is a significant milestone for the EMN for Advanced Manufacturing. The document is a product of extensive work over the past few years by the EMN, incorporating input from our outreach events and guided by the Stakeholder Council.
The first SRA issue supersedes earlier draft versions shared through our website and is now available.
The SRA:
- is used by the EMN for Advanced Manufacturing as a basis for formulating and sharing harmonised and sustainable European measurement infrastructure and metrology strategies.
- is intended to facilitate coordination and prioritisation of research and development activity in Europe, including the EURAMET Metrology Partnership funding call.
- will be updated periodically to reflect where challenges have been met, and to identify new measurement challenges and opportunities for metrology in advanced manufacturing.
- provides stakeholders both within the EMN and outside (i.e Industry, Government, Academia) with the research priorities in the topic of metrology for advanced manufacturing.
- enables discussions with related initiatives and identification of research synergies.
