Workshop and training course on new transfer standards for spectral irradiance

Afternoon 10 September, hybrid workshop

Morning 11 September, in person training, VSL, Delft

Metrology Partnership project New calibration standards and methods for radiometry and photometry after phaseout of incandescent lamps  will present recent developments and offer hands-on training.

Addressing the calibration gap left by incandescent lamp phase-out

For many years, incandescent lamps served as reliable transfer and working standards for spectral irradiance measurements. Their broadband emission characteristics made them particularly suitable as transfer and working standards for ensuring accurate measurements of spectral irradiance. However, recent European regulations have led to the gradual phase-out of these sources due to their low energy efficiency. While this transition supports sustainability goals, it creates a significant gap in calibration infrastructure.

Metrology Partnership project New calibration standards and methods for radiometry and photometry after phaseout of incandescent lamps (22IEM05, NEWSTAND) aims to address this challenge. The project focuses on developing new-technology transfer standards and dissemination methods for spectral irradiance, along with the necessary metrological infrastructure to support their implementation.

Stakeholder workshop and training course

After the first online stakeholder workshop, held virtually on 22 November 2023, the project consortium is organising a second hybrid stakeholder workshop and in-person training course on 10–11 September 2025 at VSL in Delft, the Netherlands. The event targets representatives from National Metrology Institutes, standardisation bodies, international metrology organisations, academia, testing and calibration laboratories, and companies specialising in lighting and optical measurement equipment.

Afternoon 10 September, hybrid workshop:

This workshop will present the project’s developments of new-technology transfer standard light sources and detector-based methods for disseminating the unit of spectral irradiance.

Morning 11 September, in-person training:

This training course will provide practical demonstrations of these sources and detector-based methods.

Registration

The upcoming workshop and training course offer an opportunity to review the current status of the project, provide feedback, and gain practical insights into the use of the new standards and methods. Stakeholder input remains essential to ensure the solutions developed are robust, applicable, and widely adoptable.

We encourage interested parties to register and participate in the event. Further information on the agenda and the registration link can be found at the following link.: https://www.ptb.de/epm2022/newstand/project/news-events
