EMN Radiation Protection Session on Compliance, Testing and Dosimeter Lifecycle
The European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection is participating in the European Radiation Protection Week (ERPW) 2026, held in Berlin, Germany, from 5 to 9 October. The EMN session will take place on Tuesday, 6 October, from 15:15 to 16:30. ERPW brings together leading scientists, regulators, and industry experts. The EMN’s dedicated session highlights how modern metrology supports reliable radiation protection frameworks, bridging the gap between research, legal compliance, and daily operational safety.
Chaired by Annette Röttger (EMN Chair, PTB, Germany), the session brings together three distinguished experts. They will offer insights into specific areas of radiation protection equipment – ranging from legal compliance and complex software evaluation to type testing and practical dosimeter deployment. Attendees will gain a comprehensive view of how European metrology institutes ensure that measurement results remain traceable, safe, and legally sound.
In his talk, 'Demonstrating Compliance with Legal Metrology Requirements through Risk Assessment', Marko Esche (PTB, Germany) will examine the challenges posed by the increasing digitalisation of modern measuring instruments. As electronic dosimeters come to rely more heavily on complex software, embedded systems, and network connectivity, verifying their conformity becomes correspondingly more demanding. Esche will present practical software testing procedures and risk assessment methodologies that support compliance with the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) and national weights and measures legislation.
Focusing on hardware verification, Hayo Zutz (PTB, Germany) will present 'Type Testing of Radiation Protection Dosimeters in Germany'. Drawing on the operation of five specialised photon reference radiation facilities, characterised according to ISO 4037-1, Zutz will demonstrate how the calibration of secondary standards, type examination (Module B) under German weights and measures legislation, and non-routine dosimetry – including measurements in pulsed radiation fields – safeguard the quality and reliability of area and personal monitoring instruments before they enter the market.
Rounding off the session, Rolf Behrens (PTB, Germany) will explore the journey ‘From dosimeter development to routine use – Standards and Uncertainties’. Highlighting extensive work in beta primary standards, eye lens dosimetry, and international standardisation committees (such as ISO 6980), Behrens will unpack how measurement uncertainties are quantified and how international comparison measurements guarantee a seamless transition from lab-developed dosimeters to reliable routine use.
