3D measurement of fixed storage tanks
Fixed storage tanks are widely used to store liquids in the oil and gas, petrochemical, and other industrial sectors. Accurate measurement of their capacity is essential for inventory control, commercial transactions, and operational efficiency.
OIML R 71:2008, Fixed Storage Tanks — General Requirements, establishes the general metrological requirements for fixed storage tanks. Tank calibration involves determining the relationship between the liquid level and the corresponding volume, considering the tank’s dimensions, structure, and reference points. The results are used to prepare a tank calibration table, enabling accurate and reliable determination of stored liquid quantities. In this workshop, 3D measurement of fixed storage tanks will be studied together with new developments considering the issues on traceability, uncertainty, regulations, measurement methods and other metrological challenges.
