EMN Smart North Strategic Agenda

The countries in the Nordic-Baltic region are sparsely populated and located near the arctic region. These set specific challenges related to metrology for e.g. energy production and distribution, traffic and logistics, manufacturing and forest industry. To achieve carbon neutrality and sustainability in the region, industry needs efficient and resilient NMI level metrology services that are developed to the future needs.

The European Metrology Network 'SmartNorth' drives at a sustainable development of high level metrology services for industry in Nordic and Baltic countries.

Our vision

Nordic and Baltic countries comprise a region where high level metrology services are efficient and easy accessed and fulfil the evolving needs of industry and society.

Our mission

To underpin and strengthen the competitiveness of industry in Nordic-Baltic countries by providing high level metrology infrastructure and services.

Measures of Success

To maximise benefits of the metrology infrastructure for industry and enable sustainable development, we strive for:

  • easy access to NMI level services in the region that are not available at the NMI originally contacted
  • increasing funding from EU and other funding sources
  • calibration capabilities for dynamic measurements
  • providing metrology expertise to decision makers
  • advancing metrology education and training.

Implementation

We implement our strategy through coordination of national actions that will enable Northern European industry to succeed through improved reliability of measurements:

  • joint research on measurement and calibration methods and procedures
  • coordination of national metrology institutes in maintaining and developing metrology infrastructure, competences and services.
