Using stabilized lasers for Kösters type gauge block interferometers.

Project Description

It is planned to discuss different possibilities to modify the DZNM gauge block interferometer (Köstner type) now using with helium and krypton lamps, for measurement of short gauge blocks (up to 100 mm). A CCD camera is already incorporated . Currently DZNM tend to modify the interferometer in order to:include NPL-Iodine stabilized He-Ne laser light source, simultaneously use the laser source and existing or other suitable (e.g., cadmium) lamps, automatically register and regulate the environment conditions (i.e., temperature, pressure and humidity) use computer-based acquisition of relevant data (hardware and software components).

The setup at the BEV will be used as a model for this modifications.

Moreover BEV experience with equipment regarding calibration and use of iodine stabilized He-Ne lasers will be discussed during this project.

Final Report 2004-10-15

During the cooperation, two staff members from DZNM have visited BEV for two days. During this time possibilities to modify the DZNM gauge block interferometer (Kösters type) were discussed.
The setup at the BEV was used as a model for these modifications. More specific the following items were investigated:

  • to include a stabilized HeNe-laser light source
  • simultaneously use the laser light source and existing or other suitable (e.g. cadmium) lamps
  • automatically record the environment conditions (i.e. temperature, pressure and humidity)
  • use computer-based acquisition of relevant data (hardware and software components)

Upon realization of this modifications it was agreed to perform a bilaterial (or wider) comparison to characterize the instrument.
