Realisation of a radiometric temperature scale at UME in the middle temperature range

Project Description

UME (National Metrology Institute of Turkey) has already some facilities for calibrating infrared thermometers below the silver point down to near room temperature. In order to complete these facilities, UME is seeking consultation from IMGC which has a long established experience in this field. The project will be carried out according to the following work packages:

Definition of the requirements of UME.
Selection of appropriate equipment for covering the range from -20 °C to the silver point (962 °C). This will include variable temperature blackbodies and infrared thermometers.
Provision to UME on behalf of IMGC of a set of blackbodies for the realization of the fixed points of In, Sn and Zn.
Intercomparison of the radiometric temperature scales of UME and IMGC between 150 °C and 800 °C using a transfer standard radiation thermometer developed at IMGC.

Mutual visits of experts are foreseen.
The intercomparison at point 4. above will possibly be linked to the  intercomparison foreseen in the EUROMET project 411 (Traceability in infrared radiation thermometry from -50°C to 800°C).

Final Report 2008-03-19

The original aim of the project was to provide UME with both facilities and assistance for the realization of  temperature scales by IR Thermometry. During the years the cooperation between the two institutes was strengthened and more comprehensive activities were put in place.

INRIM supplied UME with  a blackbody furnace and a set of five blackbody cells for the realization  of the fixed points of In, Sn, Zn, Al and Cu. Successively, INRIM provided the design for the construction and assembly of a precision infrared thermometer to cover the temperature interval from 150 °C to 1100 °C. The instrument was constructed at UME and a joint set-up of the instrument (completion of the assembly, alignment, first tests of functionality) and the metrological characterisation (fixed-point calibration and size-of-source effect measurement) was carried out with INRIM assistance.

As a first result of its new capabilities UME was involved into an extension of the EU funded TRIRAT project (Traceability in Infrared Radiation Thermometry) and a trilateral comparison with INRIM and NPL was carried out (“Radiation temperature scales between the indium and silver points realised at IMGC, NPL and UME using a fixed-point calibration technique”, Meas. Sci. Technol. 13 (2002) 2090–2093) which  evidenced that the differences between the three scales were well within 0.1 °C at all temperatures between the indium and silver points.

As a further output of this long standing cooperation INRIM and UME are currently taking part to the EUROMET Project 658 ext “Project to examine underlying parameters in radiance temperature scale realisation from 156 °C to 1000 °C”, a European effort also involving NPL, CEM, LNE, METAS, PTB, which purpose is to undertake an examination of some underlying parameters in temperature scale realisation using InGaAs-based radiation thermometers (size of source effect, fixed-point realisation and ambient effects) as well as a comparison of variable-temperature blackbody sources over the temperature range from 156 to 1000 °C.
