Intercomparison of viscosity standards in the high-viscosity range and test of surface-tension correction factors

Project Description

Increasing scattering of the results of capillary viscometer measurements with viscosity mainly in the viscosity range > 100 000 mm^2/s may be the result of undetected systematic errors and reveals possible limits of the use of capillary viscometers in this range.

The aim of the project is to find out sources of the increasing measurement uncertainty in the high-viscosity range. Additionally, individual surface-tension correction factors shall be tested using two selected low-viscosity liquids.

The intercamparison shall be carried out with the following viscosity standard liquids and at the following measurement temperatures:

  • 100 000 B 20 °C and 25 °C
  • Dichloromethane 20 °C
  • Trichloroethylene 20 °C

The liquids will be provided by the PTB.
The results shall be discussed at a meeting in Braunschweig in November 1997.

This project has been agreed during the EUROMET-meeting held at PTB on October 14/15, 1996.

Final Report 2002-01-15

The final report of this project can be found in the paper PTB-ThEx – 22 “EUROMET.M.V-K3 key intercomparison of liquid viscosity measurements”. It describes in detail the results of the last intercomparison including the method of uncertainty calculation of all the participants except for Japan and Romania.
