Consultation on IR Metrology at NSAI NLM, Ireland
The objective of this project is to utilise the Expertise and knowledge available from MIRS/UL-FE/LMK, Slovenia in establishing, characterising and validating a new IR temperature measurement cappability at NSAI NML, Ireland.
The project will also aim to produce fully supported uncertainty Budgets for the calibration and also participate in a bi-lateral interlaboratory comparison.
As part of the cooperation a technical expert from MIRS/UL-FE/LMK will visit NSAI NML to observe the proposed measurement system and assist in its development.

As part of the consultation process, Igor Pusnik from MIRS/UL-FE/LMK visited the NSAINML in 2014 and provided advice on the construction and characterisation of a Bath Based Blackbody Cavity Calibration Source (BBCRS). This was duly constructed and characterised by the NSAI NML, and was subsequently transported to MIRS/UL-FE/LMK by Sam Boles, a representative from the NSAI NML. A comparison of LMK cavities and the NML cavity in the vertical position were performed and the results of the inter-comparison were compiled and formed the basis of a presentation in Tempmeko 2016. The knowledge gained as part of the consultation process enabled Sam Boles to complete his Masters thesis, titled "Development of traceable Capabilities in Non-Contact Thermal Metrology" and was used to develop a calibration service for Radiation Thermometers (RTs) in the NSAI NML.

Sam Boles, a representative from NSAI transported the completed blackbody cavity to LMK and performed a comparison of LMK cavities and the NML cavity in the vertical position. The results of the inter-comparison have been compiled and will form the basis of a paper to be presented in Tempmeko 2016, as well as appearing in Sam's Masters thesis.

Igor Pusnik from MIRS/UL-FE/LMK visited the NSAI NML and imparted expertise and knowledge in the are of IR temperature measurement. As a result, a blackbody cavity is under construction as per specifications proposed by the LMK. The cavity body and mount have been completed and it has undergone temperature profiling at several temperatures. The inside of the cavity has been coated with high emissivity paint and cured. Measurements have been performed with the cavity in the vertical orientation within standard calibration baths from -30 °C to +250 °C in LMK, using a pyrometer, but issues have arisen with the stability at temperatures above 100 °C, probably due to temperature gradients along the length of the cavity. Particular focus will therefore be on measuring these gradients in the NSAI NML blackbody.
NSAI NML have also purchased a flat plate calibrator and IR thermometer, which will be characterised, and uncertainty budgets developed with the assistance of MIRS/UL-FE/LMK, in order to provide an IR calibration service in Ireland.
