Calcium, glucose, creatinine and cholesterol in human serum

Project Description

The aim of this project is to establish and demonstrate international comparability (through traceability) of measurements of organic and inorganic components inhuman serum. The concentrations are trace and minor levels. Field laboratories (routine laboratories in the clinical field) will measure the same samples as the EUROMET partners. In this way the overview of measurement capability from laboratories with different metrological function will be displayed. the reference ranges will be established mainly using Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry as a primary method of measurement.

The project is JRC funded

Final Report 2003-01-31

The aim of the project was to demonstrate international comparability of measurements of four components in serum. The project was linked to, and ran in parallel with the CCQM-P14 pilot study “Calcium in Serum” and with the CCQM Key Comparisons K11 (Glucose in Serum), K12 (Creatinine in Serum), and CCQM supplementary bilateral comparisons on cholesterol. The test materials in Project 563 were two human liquid serum materials, one of which has been spiked with glucose and creatinine. The participants chose for which components they participated. The participants’ status vary and depending on this, results may be subject to calculation of degree of equivalence according to the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) when institutes’ measurement capabilities are compared.

The reference values and uncertainties in this project are taken from the above CCQM comparisons. or from the IMEP-17 certification campaign. The basis for those values has been submitted to the CCQM by the different coordinators (IRMM/SP and NIST).

The results of the participants in EUROMET project 563 are annexed to this report. In the graphical display (Figures 1-6), preliminary reference ranges based on results in CCQM studies are also indicated (dotted lines). Equivalence statements will be calculated when the respective CCQM key comparison has been approved. Those statements may then be inserted in the Appendix B of the CIPM-MRA.

The full report of EUROMET project 563 is available from IRMM (Internal report GE/R/IM/02/03).
