An intercomparison of force standards at 50 kN and 100 kN

Project Description

NPL is piloting a CIPM Key comparison of force (at 50 kN and 100 kN) between the deadweight force standard machines of various international metrological institutes. This will determine a key comparison reference value. The purpose of this proposed project is to tie the force standard facilities of other European institutes into the reference value, to enable the equivalence between the various intitutes to be determined. It is proposed that the same equipment, techniques and procedures are used in this intercomparison as in the CIPM one.

The comparison has been completed and the results are available in the KCDB.


Progress Report 2011-03-25

All of the practical work for this comparison has been completed, including determination of the transducers' temperature sensitivities, and a Draft B report circulated. Further work which needs to be performed includes:

  • modification of the KCRV to tie in with the CIPM Key Comparison results
  • agreement within CCM Force Working Group (meeting in Beijing from 28-30 March 2011) on data analysis methods
  • production, agreement, and submission of final report

Progress Report 2010-03-19

All of the practical work for this comparison has been completed, and the Draft A report circulated. Further work which needs to be performed includes:

  • determining the temperature sensitivity of the transducers used and making any necessary corrections
  • revising the uncertainty calculations to allow for effect of correlated CMCs in calculation of weighted mean uncertainties
  •  preparation and circulation of revised Draft A / Draft B reports
