New Collaboration in European Radiation Protection

NERIS, the European Platform on Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Response and Recovery, aims to create a forum for dialogue and further development for all European organisations and institutions active in radiological and nuclear emergency preparedness.

Likewise, the European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection brings together scientific and technical expertise and supports European research and cooperation. It focuses on measurement infrastructure and ensures the accuracy, traceability and reliability of radiation measurements.

Public protection across Europe benefits when the key players in radiological emergency response collaborate more closely than before with the leading organisations in Europe for radiation protection metrology – for example, to jointly advance the use of drones for radioactivity measurements or to integrate new measurement methods into operational practice in emergency response.

During the European Radiation Protection Week 2026 in Berlin, 5–9 October 2026, NERIS and the EMN for Radiation Protection formalised their Memorandum of Understanding, expressing a shared commitment to closer cooperation and a common approach to future action.

On behalf of NERIS, Florian Gering, Head of the Emergency Preparedness & Response Division of the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) – who is also the Vice-Chair of NERIS – signed the agreement. Annette Röttger, Chair of the EMN for Radiation Protection and member of the Executive Board of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) signed on behalf of EMN for Radiation Protection.

Florian Gering commented:

“NERIS is dedicated to continuously advancing European emergency preparedness. This partnership guarantees that our response strategies are backed by the highest standards of radiation protection metrology, ensuring the best possible protection for the public.”

Annette Röttger commented:

“Reliable and accurate measurements are the backbone of effective radiation protection. By joining forces with NERIS, we ensure that our metrological infrastructure directly supports operational emergency response and enhances public safety across Europe.“

The signing of the agreement during European Radiation Protection Week 2026 sends a strong political signal that such gatherings can strengthen cooperation across Europe, foster dialogue between different fields, and create the foundation for lasting interdisciplinary partnerships.
