TC Flow members contributed to ISO volume standards

The Volume subgroup of EURAMET’s TC Flow reports a successful collaboration with ISO TC 48

EURAMET’s Technical Committee for Flow,  especially its subgroup on ‘Volume’, has contributed significantly to the revision of volume standards of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) in the past 10 years.

Thanks to an official liaison between ISO/TC 48 for laboratory equipment  and EURAMET, Europe’s measurement science community has the opportunity to actively participate in ISO's standard development work, which may be incorporated into drafts of International Standards or other ISO deliverables.

The revised ISO/TC 48 volume standards include:

  • ISO/TR 20461:2023 , Determination of uncertainty for volume measurements of a piston-operated volumetric apparatus using a gravimetric method
  • ISO 8655:2022 (9 parts), Piston Operated apparatus
  • ISO 4787:2021, Laboratory glass and plastic ware – Volumetric instruments – Methods for testing of capacity and for use

In EURAMET the contribution to ISO TC 48 is seen as very important, not only because metrologists are using these standards, but also because the measurement science community can provide the necessary metrology input to these documents during revision or development for mutual benefit. EURAMET's TCs are providing the necessary infrastructure to collect feedback on the standards directly from the European metrology community.

Elsa Batista , Convenor of TC-F Subgroup ‘Volume’ comments:

“The participation of members of EURAMET’s TC Flow in the revision and elaboration of ISO standards results in the improvement of calibration procedures. This allows more accurate and reliable volume measurement results, which will benefit all members of laboratories and industry, and the global economy.”

TC Flow’s expertise was especially useful in the metrological requirements specification, terminology definition and uncertainty calculation. The EURAMET calibration guides 19 and 18  are cited in the above listed ISO documents and are considered key references in these new editions.

This is a great recognition of EURAMET documents, the TC Flow expert knowledge in volume measurements and represents a very good example of EURAMET and ISO cooperation.
