On BBC News: EURAMET’s EMRP project Energy Harvesting
Last week the BBC visited the National Physical Laboratory (NPL, UK) to find out about the “Metrology for Energy Harvesting” joint research project (JRP ENG02 Harvesting). The project is part of EURAMET’s European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) and aims to develop sources of sustainable energy from human activity and natural processes. Harvesting and utilisation of a small fraction of energy wasted as heat and vibration from human and environmental processes could contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions. The Energy Harvesting project will develop new technologies, devices and measurement methods that enable the exploitation of waste energy to provide small, but reliable and sustainable, sources of power.
The article, which is on the commercial potential of energy harvesting technology, has been published on BBC News online. The article includes an interview with Dr Paul Weaver (NPL), who leads the project workpackage to develop reliable and traceable metrologies for the evaluation of the electro/magneto-mechanical coupling in piezo and magnetic materials and structures for energy harvesting applications.
BBC News online is one of the most popular news websites in the world with over 40 million visitors each week. Dr Weaver also recorded a piece for BBC World Service which should be aired in the coming weeks. BBC World Service is one of the most listened to radio services in the world.
