New technique for MEMS power measurement

A presentation on a ‘New Powerful Method Based on Electrical Harmonic Distortion Analysis for Electromechanical Characterizations of MEMS Devices’ was given at the TechConnect World Summit & Innovation Showcase 2013 by JRP-Partner LNE for EMRP project: ‘Metrology for Energy Harvesting’ (ENG02 Harvesting).
 
JRP ENG02 will develop sources of sustainable energy from human activity and natural processes. The harvesting and utilisation of a small fraction of energy wasted as heat and vibration from human and environmental processes could contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions. This project aims to develop new technologies, devices and measurement methods that enable the exploitation of waste energy to provide small, but reliable and sustainable, sources of power.
 
The presentation at TechConnect World has attracted much media coverage, including articles in Electronics Weekly, a leading English language news website for electronics professionals, and Engineering and Technology, the news website from the UK’s highly respected Institute of Engineering and Technology. The presentation by LNE demonstrated a new, cheap and accurate experimental method based on electrical harmonic distortion analysis to determine mechanical characteristics (resonant frequency) of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) devices used in widespread applications. These include energy scavenging, cantilever-based microsystems for gas sensing and atomic force microscopy or any kind of MEMS resonators.
