Network-Strategy in the pipeline to strongly serve members and directly engage with stakeholders

Members of the European Metrology Network (EMN) for Climate and Ocean Observation endorsed accomplishments plans of the network’s leadership by re-electing its chair and section chairs for a second term of office.

Announced after the network’s fourth annual meeting generously hosted by SMD, the Belgian National Metrology Institute, in Brussels on 21 and 22 June 2022, the elected candidates are:

• EMN Chair: Emma Woolliams, NPL (United Kingdom)
• EMN Vice-Chair; Atmosphere Observation: Celine Pascale, METAS (Switzerland)
• EMN Vice-Chair, Ocean Observation: Paola Fisicaro, LNE (France)
• EMN Vice-Chair, Land and Earth Observation: Nigel Fox, NPL (United Kingdom)

The current term of office is from 21 June 2022 to June 2025.

First term achievements

In her mission statement, Emma Woolliams highlighted EMN achievements in the first three years, which included a first stakeholder needs review and strategic research agenda, a website and communications plan, and presentations at various conferences, the European Parliament, and a high-level science debate under the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The network established direct links with external communities, received direct approaches from the MINKE and TRUSTED projects, was invited to present at the Gas Analysis conference, while connections with  European Space Agency continued to develop.

The EMN is also central to organising the September 2022 BIPM & WMO Metrology for Climate Action Workshop.

Developing strategy

During a second term as chair, Emma looked forward to leading the development of a strong EMN strategy serving members and developing mechanisms to interact more directly with stakeholders.

For her part, Céline Pascale said,

“As vice chair, I want to continue to promote sustainable collaboration and coordination between all members in the Atmospheric Ob-servation section as well as with the two other sections of the EMN. In the next 3 years, I intend to reinforce links with stakeholders and involve them sustaina-bly to establish fit-for-purpose strategies.”

Paola Fisicaro said that she is keen to continue her mission for a second term, to further develop a dialogue among EMN members and to strengthen collaborations with external partners.

Nigel Fox undertook to help support the formation of partnerships between stakeholders with existing capabilities and encourage investments from new collaborators.

A framework for future work programmes

In the run-up to the BIPM & WMO Metrology for Climate Action Workshop on 26 to 30 September 2022, the EMN continues to develop connections with a broad range of European expertise. New insights provided by expert recommendations that will be developed in the workshop will further boost these efforts and provide a framework to prioritise future work programmes.
