Power Plant on the banks of a river

Project develops new measurement methods for key air pollutants, helping to address health concerns and new EU directives

The project

EMPIR project Metrology for air pollutant emissions (16ENV08, IMPRESS 2) is working to develop measurement methods for newly regulated pollutants, such as ammonia and hydrogen fluoride. The project is also addressing the lack of uncertainty characterisation in flow measurements and developing next-generation techniques for increasingly stringent pollution limits. The results will enable regulators, process plant operators, manufacturers and measurement service providers to comply with emission limits and monitoring requirements, supporting efforts to ensure cleaner air across Europe for the benefit of public health and the environment.

Current concerns about atmospheric particulate matter concentration and their effect on human health lead to much interest in the research results of the project.

Italian TV coverage

Gabriele Migliavacca from project participant ISSI was interviewed on Italian national television station RAI 3, where he explained how the dilution chamber measurement method developed in the EMPIR project works.

Italian press coverage

A press release from project partners ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) was published in three major Italian newspapers as well as many online news outlets. The three major Italian newspapers were:

  • Sole 24 Ore ‘Heating: ENEA’s innovative system for measuring fine particles’
  • Corriere della Sera ‘ENEA has developed an innovative system for measuring fine particles from heating systems such as boilers or stoves: it could become a European standard’
  • Repubblica ‘Environment, ENEA: innovative system for measurement of fine particles issued by heaters’

This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
