Final chance to register for BIPM-WMO Metrology for Climate Action Workshop

Programme of the BIPM & WMO Metrology for Climate Action Workshop

Opportunity to raise issues and recommended actions related to climate action and observation

Over 500 experts are already registered and there is still time to join them for the BIPM-WMO Metrology for Climate action online workshop, on 26 - 30 September.

The deadline for registration for the workshop is Wednesday, 14 September.

In fact, workshop activity is already underway. Registered participants can watch pre-recorded presentations alongside linked posters, post comments and ask questions.

Highly eminent speakers expected for opening keynote session

The workshop programme, released by BIPM, promises insights of some of the most eminent and influential voices in climate science, metrology, and the application of data for advising government action.

An opening plenary session on 26 September 2022 (13:00–16:15, UTC+2, via Zoom) will highlight some of the opportunities and requirements related to climate action and observation:

  • Opening of Workshop and Workshop Aims: by Antony Rea (WMO) and Dolores Del Campo (CIPM)
  • WMO programmes and their need for traceable measurements: Dr. Wenjian Zhang, WMO Assistant Secretary-General
  • International Metrology Programs supporting Climate and Environment Observa-tions: Dr. Wynand Louw, President of the CIPM
  • The Need for Climate Action: Dr. Valérie Masson-Delmotte, LSCE and prominent contributor to IPCC reports
  • Observing the state of the global climate, emerging needs (previewing the forth-coming GCOS Implementation Plan 2022): Prof. Dr. Han Dolman, GCOS chairman
  • Scientific data for advising government policy: Sir Patrick Vallance, UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser

Also on day one, chair of EURAMET's 'Climate and Ocean Observation' network and workshop 'Theme 1' Co-chair Emma Woolliams will set the scene for the discussions to follow on Theme 1 topics, and expectations for outputs of the workshop.

Prioritising metrology requirements and recommendations

Interactive Poster Sessions on day two and three of the workshop (27-28 September 2022, 13:00–16:00, UTC+2), are followed by two days of parallel meetings for the nine topics covered (29-30 September 2022, 13:00–15:00, UTC+2). For these sessions, ex-perts will convene online on each day for two hours, with the aim of producing actionable draft recommendations on requirements for measurements and metrology for each topic.

Deadline for registration for the workshop, 14 September.
