The first ‘ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days’ provided a special session on metrology where high level speakers gave presentations on the latest trends of metrology in Southeast Asia (SEA) and Europe.

One of the keynote speakers was EURAMET’s Chairperson, Kamal Hossain, who gave an overview on the role of metrology in science, technology and society, including EURAMET’s current and proposed European Metrology Research Programmes.
Further presentations on Metrology related topics were given by Prayoon Shiowattana, Director of the National Metrology Institute of Thailand (NIMT) and Tanfer Yandayan, Chief Researcher at TUBITAK UME, the Turkish National Metrology Institute. Both speakers gave an introduction on important topics such as the demands of metrology in South East Asia and Europe, future needs, cooperation activities, mobility of researchers and funding opportunities.

The metrology session during the ‘ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days’ were organised by TUBITAK UME and NML-SIRIM, the National Metrology Institute of Malaysia, and took place in Bangkok in January.
The event was part of the SEA-EU-NET 2 project, which received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. The project with a budget of four million euro focuses on societal challenges and includes 20 consortium partners. The aim of the project is to build upon and leverage strong Europe-Southeast Asia Science and Technology relationships developed through past support and coordination actions, to deepen engagement and build momentum in Science and Technology cooperation as well as broadening the scope of Europe-Southeast Asia cooperation through stimulating sustainable innovation collaborations.
Currently a task for cooperation in metrology is in progress and coordinated by TUBITAK UME and NML-SIRIM. It is considered that the establishment of a strong collaboration in metrology between two regions will support the Science and Technology cooperation.

Prior to the metrology session, a meeting between Prayoon Shiowattana and Kamal Hossain was carried out. They were joined by Thaweesak Koanantakool, President of NSTDA, the National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand.
