BIPM initiative: Young Metrologists’ 2050+ Vision

Take part in EURAMET workshop and BIPM survey!

The BIPM, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, is keen to hear the views of young metrologists on the future of measurement science and has launched an initiative called ‘Young Metrologists’ 2050+ Vision’.

The Initiative aims to collect visionary ideas for future opportunities and challenges in metrology.

Young metrologists, individuals who have worked in the field of metrology for less than 5 years, are invited to join this foresight exercise in collaboration with their Regional Metrology Organisation to trigger and facilitate visionary ideas for future opportunities and challenges through workshops, debates, and interviews.

Peter Pavlasek, (SMU, Slovakia), is EURAMET’s coordinator for the ‘Young Metrologists’ 2050+ Vision’ initiative and Deputy Partnership Chair:

“This is a unique chance for young metrologists to influence an overall metrology strategy and to be part of a global initiative. I hope that many will join our workshop and fill in the survey to share their views and visions for what the future of metrology could look like. In addition, this is a great opportunity for Europe’s metrology community to engage with young scientists, share knowledge, and help create a collective vision that is inclusive, innovative, and sustainable.”

Questionnaire

BIPM has developed a questionnaire to help identify emerging trends and technologies, and anticipate new challenges and opportunities that could have an impact on metrology in 2050+. Also societal, economic and environmental factors that may drive these changes should be considered.

To fill in the survey, respondents can collaborate with experts and peers, exchange ideas and explore different scenarios.

Fill in the survey by end of April 2024 at Questionnaire on Young Metrologists' 2050+ vision (jotform.com) >>

Save the date & participate: EURAMET Workshop

On Tuesday, 9 April 2024 from 11:00 - 13:00 CEST (09:00 – 11:00 UTC) a EURAMET online workshop will take place to discuss first inputs and develop further ideas on the ‘Young Metrologists’ 2050+ Vision’.

The workshop aims at individuals who have worked in the field of metrology for less than 5 years, but also more experienced metrologists are welcome to join.

The workshop will be held via ZOOM and can be accessed via this link: https://bipm-org.zoom.us/j/86391555318?pwd=bcSe6AtcG26JrN0COLmjJuWmdoNu2S.1

Next steps

An in-person consolidation workshop involving the RMO Coordinators will take place on 1 - 3 July 2024 at BIPM. The top five respondents amongst the young metrologists will be invited to elaborate on their ideas online.

Finally, the results of the initiative will be presented at the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 2025 and will complement the CIPM Strategy 2030+. The authors of the most visionary ideas will be invited to participate in this event.
