World Oceans Day 2019
8 June 2019
The United Nations says ‘We celebrate World Oceans Day to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe.
The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilise and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans. They are a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere. In the end, it is a day to celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.’
EURAMET is proud to support research projects, through the European Metrology Research Programmes, EMRP and EMPIR, that develop measurement capabilities and provide input to international standards across many scientific and technical areas.
Projects and metrology networks contributing towards supporting a healthy ocean include:
- European Metrology Network for Climate and Ocean Observation
- Joint Network Project to Support the European Metrology Network for Climate and Ocean Observation (18NET04, ForClimateOcean)
- Metrology for ocean salinity and acidity (ENV05, Ocean)
EMPIR projects are co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
EMRP joint research projects are part of EURAMET’s European Metrology Research Programme. The EMRP is jointly funded by the EMRP participating countries within EURAMET and the European Union.
