A Metrologia 2016 highlight

EMRP projects overview on oceanic salinity and pH, and atmospheric humidity selected for ‘2016 Highlights of Metrologia’ publication

Measurements of oceanic salinity, pH and relative humidity are highly relevant for climate science but all have unsolved problems in their SI definitions respectively traceability to SI units. EMRP projects Metrology for ocean salinity and acidity (ENV05 Ocean) and Metrology for essential climate variables (ENV58 MeteoMet2) aim to improve the measurements of these quantities and the work of the projects shaped the content of the published paper.

The paper entitled “Metrological challenges for measurements of key climatological observables: oceanic salinity and pH, and atmospheric humidity. Part 1: overview” which was published as part of a four part series has been selected as one of the 2016 Highlights of Metrologia, a journal of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures published by IOP Publishing. The paper is free to download.  The Metrologia paper is considered to be a standard reference article for the oceanographic community. EMRP research projects brought together the metrology and oceanographic communities, as demonstrated in the ENV05 case studies and now the metrology community have been invited to join the Joint Committee for the Properties of Seawater - the organisation responsible for maintaining and improving seawater standards.
