World Metrology Day - 20 May 2023

This year marks the 148th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875.

The theme for World Metrology Day 2023 is Measurements supporting the global food system, where current and future metrological challenges to guarantee availability and sustainability of food are in the focus.

Measurement science plays an integral role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing, international trade and in protecting the global environment. Reliable and accurate measurements are also essential for the provision of high-quality health services. Even today, the original objective of the Metre Convention, to achieve worldwide uniformity of measurement, remains just as important. That's why the global metrology community come together yearly to mark the occasion, to celebrate past achievements and create new and exciting opportunities that can better serve our stakeholders in the future.

Providing access to safe and affordable food remains one of the major challenges - from governments to farmers and food producers who trade products through distributors and retailers to consumers at international, national and local levels. To trade internationally and to access markets for high-value products, producers must be able to show that they meet food standards. Additionally, governments need to ensure safety and fair trade especially in local markets for food. All of this is supported by reliable measurements of the quantity and quality of the primary and processed food products involved.

Innovations within the food industry are vital to limit threats against the global food system and metrology is an essential element of the modern quality infrastructure that fosters these developments. At EURAMET, related measurement challenges are addressed by Technical Committees, European Metrology Networks and collaborative research projects.

A special joint message from the directors of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) has also been posted to expand on this year's theme.
