Survey on stakeholder needs for knowledge transfer and capacity building in the field of radiation protection metrology

The aim of this survey is to identify gaps in knowledge transfer and capacity building that may exist for you in the field of radiation protection metrology. These types of activities are vital for ensuring safe environments for citizens to live and work, and to enable compliance with national and European regulations. Our focus is on metrology, e.g. traceable measurements of radiation and dose that underpin radiation protection regulations. Radiation protection knowledge transfer and capacity building includes training opportunities, support for regulatory compliance, interlaboratory comparisons, and much more besides. The gaps should relate to your needs and any other stakeholders youmay also represent.

For this purpose, we kindly ask you to complete the following  survey.

Your organisation
What are your needs for knowledge transfer in the field of radiation protection metrology that are currently not being addressed? Please describe below.
Notes:
• Examples of “Environment” exposure to radiation: NORM (e.g. radon and progeny); contamination of drinking water
• Examples of “Workplace” exposure: sterilisation and industrial radiography; nuclear power plant or other nuclear facility; flight crew during long distance air travel; hospital staff conducting diagnostic and therapeutic treatments
• Examples of “Medical” exposure: staff in diagnostic and therapy
• Knowledge sharing needs can apply for both routine and emergency applications

Here are two examples for the completion of the survey:

Example 1
Specific area of metrology: Neutron (including dosimetry)
Specific area of exposure: Workplace in medicine
Gap / need for knowledge transfer: Staff require training for operating neutron area dosimeters when working in proton therapy clinics.

Example 2
Specific area of metrology: Radioactivity (liquid/solid/surface)
Specific area of exposure: Environment - emergency
Gap / need for knowledge transfer: Training required for wide-area surface contamination monitoring within exclusion zones, following radiologal/nuclear accidents.

Data privacy
Data collected during this survey will inform the members of the European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection about gaps in the availability of training opportunities, capacity building activities, support for regulatory compliance, interlaboratory comparisons etc, relevant to radiation protection metrology in Europe and will support the EMN in establishing and promoting a knowledge sharing programme.

The full data will be processed by the EMN members NPL (UK) and PTB (Germany) which are the institutes in charge of conducting the survey and its analysis. The data without personal information will be shared with the other EMN members. The personal data will not be used for other purposes and will be deleted.
