Nowadays, many devices in our houses are DC powered, from our lights to our smartphones and our electric vehicles to our battery storage. Similarly, power generation is becoming increasingly based on DC, driven by renewable sources such as solar photovoltaics.
Electricity grids, currently designed for AC systems, could benefit from a more efficient and cost-effective DC distribution infrastructure. DC grids are already being implemented across Europe and this transition needs to be supported by a reliable and accurate measurement infrastructure. This is crucial to be able to quantify the efficiency and therefore the benefits of DC systems.
Regulation also needs support to enable the assessment of power quality, and the metering of DC power consumption, such as in the case of electric vehicles. The Smart Electricity Grid metrology network addresses these challenges enabling the commercial implementation of DC applications.
