Strategic Research Agenda

The European Metrology Network for Safe and Sustainable Food (EMN Food) aims to act as a central hub for food-related measurement science, bridging the gap between research and stakeholders in food legislation, control, and industry. Its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), jointly prepared by members, partners and stakeholders of the network, focuses on developing and harmonising the measurement capabilities required to meet the challenges of food safety, quality, and sustainability.

Key research areas include improving measurement methods for trace contaminants, like microplastics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), developing certified reference materials for accurate analysis, and supporting the traceability of all food-related measurements to international standards.

The SRA's ultimate goal is to provide a unified voice for Europe in metrology, ensuring the reliability and comparability of food analysis across the continent to support regulatory bodies, protect consumer health, and enhance the competitiveness of the food industry.
