Hydrogen-enriched natural gas

Hydrogen-enriched natural gas, H2NG or HENG, is a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas.

In theory, the two can be mixed in any proportion, but typically H2NG in the range of 10 to 20 vol-% represents the most promising near-term option. H2NG addresses two dominant energy and environmental issues: decarbonisation and improved energy management.

Fast measurements methods capable of measuring high concentration of hydrogen in natural gas must be developed in order to help gas distribution networks maintain hydrogen levels within their tolerance range. There is also a need for physical models that can calculate calorific values in fluctuating blends.

Specific measurement challenges for H2NG are related to flow, gas composition and are dealt with in the following joint research projects within EURAMET's European Metrology Research Programmes, EMRP and EMPIR:
