The European Metrology Network for Energy Gases organised a successful workshop to engage with stakeholders

The European metrology network (EMN) for Energy Gases held a successful hybrid workshop from 21 to 22 of March 2023 at IPQ in Portugal. The workshop “Measurement solutions for Energy Gases” discussed new trends from industry and governments concerning the transition to renewable and sustainable gases.

On the first day, presentations from leading European organisations working with hydrogen and carbon capture, as well as the utilisation and storage industries supported the insightful discussion about necessary regulations and strategies needed for the transition towards cleaner energy sources.

The second day highlighted the technical outcomes from European metrology research programmes and examined current measurement challenges that hinder the use of cleaner energy gases. The technical presentations discussed new advancements that will help the energy transition, including improved hydrogen vehicles, increasing the use of biofuels as well as reducing CO2 by decarbonising the gas grid. The link to the recordings of the presentations can be found here.

The event successfully brought together stakeholders, researchers, and industry experts to discuss current metrological developments and needs in the field of alternative gases. Policy experts presented updates about European policies that affect the transition to cleaner fuels. Additionally, information about the European Partnership on Metrology and the support it offers was shared at the conference.

Special thanks go to David Learmonth (NEL) and Florbela Dias and IPQ colleagues for their help in organising and running this workshop.

Annarita Baldan (VSL), the EMN Energy Gases Chair, comments on the success of the workshop:

“The workshop succeeded in bringing together the energy gas community and in showing how industrial needs are promptly supported by innovative measurement solutions. It is rewarding to see that the event was well attended, because it confirmed the role of the EMN for Energy Gases as a knowledge centre for measurements in the field of energy gases.”
