Strengthening the Network:
University of Strathclyde joins EMN Smart Grids

The University of Strathclyde, a top-ranked international technological university based in Glasgow, has officially joined EMN Smart Grids. With a strong track record in power and energy research, Strathclyde’s Institute for Energy and Environment has twice been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize and is recognised as one of Europe’s leading centres in this field. Its research infrastructure includes bench-top rigs, HV labs, sensing labs, 100 kW DPSL microgrid, and the multi-MW-scale PNDC. Strathclyde’s teams have contributed to several projects within EURAMET European Metrology Research Programmes. With this expertise, the university will play an important role in advancing smart electricity grids and precision metrology within the EMN.

Annual General Meeting 2025

On 3 June 2025, the Annual General Meeting of EMN Smart Grids was held at the Institute for Quality Services & Portuguese Metrology Institute (IPQ) in Lisbon, Portugal. Highlights included updates from EURAMET, insights from other European Metrology Networks, and international perspectives from the Asia-Pacific region. Oijai Ongrai from NIMT, the Institute of Metrology of Thailand, provided updates on the activities of the 'Asia Pacific Metrology Programme' (APMP). Key discussions focused on advancing the EMN Smart Grid Strategic Research Agenda, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and preparing for the CPEM 2026 conference. The day concluded with inspiring exchanges in the vibrant atmosphere of Lisbon.

Webinar: Advance your Knowledge in Electric Power Metrology

Recording from the latest BIPM/CCEM webinar 'Introduction to Electric Power Metrology' are now online. Held in October 2024, the event brought together international experts to discuss precision power measurement and transformer loss calibration. Ilya Budovsky (NMIA, Australia) outlined the realisation of the unit of electric power (watt) and emerging needs in precision measurements of electric power and related quantities, while Gert Rietveld (VSL, Netherlands) focused on the calibration of power transformer loss measurement systems (LMSs). The webinar discussed high voltage, high current, and power measurement techniques required to ensure LMS calibration meets strict accuracy standards.
