RECENT HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SMART GRIDS COMMUNITY:

A roadmap to innovation: discover our Strategic Research Agenda

A new document pinpoints the future challenges - and highlights research-based solutions - to deliver cleaner and more sustainable energy through modern electricity networks.
The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of the European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids (EMN Smart Grids) addresses challenges in transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable electricity networks in Europe. It focuses on measurement practices for grid decarbonisation, including renewable energy integration, revenue metering, cybersecurity, data integration, and the impact of electric vehicles and modern electronics. The SRA provides targeted research initiatives and innovative solutions, promoting cooperation among National Metrology Institutes and aligning with European climate goals.

The development of EMN Smart Grids' SRA was a collaborative effort. Our network's members, along with power networks key players from national and European levels, worked together to identify critical measurement challenges, prioritise research initiatives, and offer innovative solutions. This process aligns with industry needs and European climate objectives, fostering cleaner and more sustainable energy grids.

News update: European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids publishes Strategic Research Agenda

EMN Smart Grids gives opening keynote at SMAGRIMET conference

Gert Rietveld, past EMN Smart Grids Chair, was invited to give the opening keynote presentation at the SMAGRIMET 2023 conference. The focus of this conference was on Smart Grid Metrology, which excellently aligns with the research activities of the EMN members and partners.
In his keynote speech, Gert addressed the measurement challenges identified by the network's stakeholders for each of the 8 main themes of EMN Smart Grids. His presentation centred around the roadmaps that were developed by the EMN members as part of the Strategic Research Agenda to address these challenges.

For the theme of digital substations, a further presentation was given that detailed the work in the recently-started project 'Metrology for digital substation instrumentation' (see further information below in ‘Collaborative Projects related to the EMN’). As an example of the need driving this project, a case was presented of a transmission system operator (TSO) that would like to use optical current transformers with digital output in its grid but found the infrastructure for testing this instrumentation lacking.

EMN Smart Electricity Grids at CIM 2023: key metrology support to the EU Green Deal strategy

An overview of the EMN Smart Electricity Grids current and future key-contributions to the implementation of the EU Green Deal strategy have been provided at the 21st International Metrology Congress (CIM 2023), which was held in early March 2023 in Lyon (France).
The congress is a well known international event which takes places every two years bridging the latest advancements in all fields of metrology and the industry and end-user communities.
EMN Smart Grids mission and relevant themes, R&D highlights from EMPIR and Metrology Partnership projects, and the EMN's Strategic Research Agenda were pointed out in a session dedicated to DC and AC metrology, attended by experts from industry and academia.
The visibility of the EMN Smart Electricity Grids has been further enhanced by joining the EURAMET booth on the Energy and Environment networks, set up at the CIM 2023 'Metrology Village'. This was a fruitful opportunity for the network to learn more about the community’s metrology needs, build relationships with stakeholders, and establish stronger links for the future.

COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS RELATED TO THE EMN:

Calibration methods for 'substations of the future' in digitised energy networks

Image showing High voltage towers

Due to the wider use of decentralised renewable energy resources, future electrical power grids require real-time control and monitoring to ensure their stability under more challenging conditions. Digital substation solutions according to IEC 61850 and IEC 61869 are increasingly replacing analogue instrumentation which are approaching the end of their useful lifespan.

To support the European electrical power industry, the project 'Metrology for digital substation instrumentation' (Digital-IT) will provide the currently missing solutions for the calibration and timing of new types of digital substation instrumentation, e.g., sampled value (SV) enabled equipment such as stand-alone merging units (SAMUs), digital instrument transformers and instrument transformer measuring bridges.
The project will also support IEC TC 38 ‘Instrument Transformers’ in their work on the revision of the related standards, with the goal of proposing solutions for more precise measurements of digital substation instrumentation.

Metrology Partnership Call 2024

The European Partnership on Metrology will launch its 2024 Call in January.

Potential Research Topics (PRT) for the following themes can then be submitted:

  • Green Deal
  • Digital Transformation
  • Normative
  • Research Potential

Further information will be provided on the EURAMET website and on the Participant Portal in January 2024.

The EMN Smart Grids and TC Electricity and Magnetism are organising a brainstorming meeting to discuss proposals for the 2024 Call on 8 & 9 January 2024.
