Metrology to enable rapid and accurate clinical measurements in acute management of sepsis
Faster and more accurate diagnostics to improve survival rates
Sepsis is a life-threatening complication of infections, responsible for about 700,000 deaths a year in Europe, and six million worldwide. To improve the speed and accuracy of sepsis diagnoses using existing in vitro diagnostic (IVD) methods, measurements of established biomarkers for this condition need to be traceable and techniques compliant with EU regulations. Newly developed techniques also require metrological evaluation, as well as the machine learning algorithms used to identify solutions for sepsis management.
This project has improved the accuracy and speed of methods used to diagnose sepsis and its causes, by developing traceable procedures and reference materials for currently used biomarkers, plus new techniques have been assessed. Methods developed in the project will enable IVD manufacturers to demonstrate the accuracy of their technologies for reliable clinical use, including near-patient tests for diagnostics at the point of care. The project will contribute to standards development, with the ultimate objective of faster, more accurate sepsis diagnosis for improved patient survival rates.
