Update of the European Metrology Network for Advanced Manufacturing
This newsletter provides information about the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the EMN for Advanced Manufacturing in October 2024 and reflects on different activities the network performed in the past 12 months.
Harald Bosse, the EMN Chair, comments: "The EMN for Advanced Manufacturing focusses on the metrology requirements in quality assurance along the entire manufacturing chain from advanced materials, smart manufacturing systems, to components and products. Based on valuable input from our stakeholders we have developed a Strategic Research Agenda which identifies metrology research needs to be addressed to support European manufacturing industries in the future.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all contributors for the support of our different activities reported in this newsletter and I am looking forward to interesting talks and discussions at our 4th Annual General Meeting at the PTB in Braunschweig, Germany on 23 and 24 October 2024."

Strategic research agenda
A main activity of the EMN has been the development of its strategic research agenda (SRA). The document has been developed from the draft SRA published in 2023. The SRA went through the EURAMET review process and the stakeholder council and will be published in the final version soon. A separate news story on the approach and the main results of the SRA will be announced when it is published.

The AdvanceManu network has a new website
Since the end of May 2024, the new EMN website is online. Stakeholders find information on the EMN’s objectives, activities and events. Information is also provided on current research and the strategy of the EMN. In addition, the web-based platform contains a service desk that can be used by stakeholders as a specialised single point of contact for questions related to metrology issues in advanced manufacturing.

Memorandum of Understanding between VAMAS and EURAMET
Following on from contact established between the EMN and the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS), a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between VAMAS and EURAMET in October 2023. This MoU aims to provide a mechanism for cooperative activities related to metrology for advanced materials within Europe and support the development of standards and reference materials. Final project meeting of AdvManuNet and EMN workshop in May 2024
The Joint Network Project AdvManuNet, which supported the development of the EMN for Advanced Manufacturing, held its final project meeting at BAM, Berlin in May 2024. The achievements of the project were reported with participation of EURAMET and the network's stakeholder council.
The meeting was followed by a hybrid EMN workshop on the future of metrology for Advanced Manufacturing with 17 people in presence and 30 online participants from across European NMIs, DIs, academia and industry. This workshop aimed to inform stakeholders about the progress of the EMN's development, in particular the establishment of the Strategic Research Agenda.
In addition, technical presentations on joint research projects on nanometrology for advanced manufacturing and presentations from stakeholder council members were given. Read more >>

Previous EMN outreach activities and workshops
The EMN has published an article in the journal Precision describing its development and the production of the SRA. The article provides a story arc from the previous article in late 2020 which described the plan for the Joint Network Project.
Another article about the EMN was published in the Probe magazine (CMM Club Italia).

Traceable metrology of soft X-ray to IR optical constants and nanofilms for advanced manufacturing (20IND04, ATMOC)
|
|
The accurate characterisation of optical constants of materials and thin films over a wide wavelength range from soft X-ray to Infrared is of utmost importance for the European photonics and semiconductor industry.
The ATMOC project, funded under the European Partnership on Metrology, has developed reliable measurements methods including inverse modelling approaches and reference materials to support advanced manufacturing processes in these important industry sectors.

Dynamic applications of large volume metrology in industry of tomorrow environments (20IND02, DynaMITE)
|
|
Supporting automated and reconfigurable manufacturing systems of larger components needs fast and accurate 3D metrology systems reliably operating in often harsh manufacturing environments.
The DynaMITE project, funded under the European Partnership on Metrology, has developed different advanced laser interferometry systems, which were optimised for measurement speed and accuracy in challenging environments.
