EMN Advanced Manufacturing | Newsletter Issue 1 | May 2023

Focusing on Europe's metrology needs in smart manufacturing systems

Advanced manufacturing requires new and enhanced metrology methods to assure the quality of manufacturing processes and the resulting products. The European Metrology Network for Advanced Manufacturing will drive the high-level coordination of the metrology community in this field and will foster the impact of metrology developments for advanced manufacturing.

Over the last year, the main focus of the EMN has been the development of a draft strategic research agenda (SRA) for this field. By prioritising the SRA development, the draft was available as a point of reference for potential research topics for the European Partnership on Metrology industry call 2023. The production of the draft SRA has comprised several stages and involved the stakeholder council and academic, governmental, and industry stakeholders. A significant focus of the EMN so far has been the understanding of stakeholder needs for metrology for advanced manufacturing.

Harald Bosse, the EMN Chair, comments:

“The EMN for Advanced Manufacturing aims to provide European industries with the manufacturing metrology solutions, skills, and knowledge base required to support a rapid transition to highly competitive, digitalised, and green production.

The metrology challenges faced in advanced manufacturing are being catalogued and addressed in the draft SRA which is under development and on track to be submitted to EURAMET for approval in August 2023.”

NEWS FROM THE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING COMMUNITY:

Metrology for Semiconductor Technologies consultation event

On the 8th July 2022, EURAMET and the EMN jointly organised an Open Consultation event on ’Metrology for Semiconductor Technologies’.  The compiled stakeholder needs will help to guide the development of future calls for joint research projects on ’Metrology for Industry’ within the European Partnership on Metrology, as well as helping to explore synergies with calls in other funding programmes, such as KDT-JU, with respect to the requirements of the European Chips Act. The event included presentations from both academia and industry with speakers from ASML, IMEC, ZEISS, STMicroelectronics. Through stakeholder consultations the EMN has been able to provide input on metrology needs to the scoping process of the work programme of the Chips Joint Undertaking.

EMN organised a successful annual general meeting and stakeholder meeting

The EMN held the second annual general meeting and stakeholder meeting in a hybrid mode at NPL in Teddington, UK in October 2022. The event included presentations from stakeholders with a focus on Advanced Materials, including those from industries that are at the forefront of European Advanced Manufacturing ranging from battery manufacturing to aerospace. The meeting allowed the EMN to present and receive feedback from stakeholders on the contents of the draft SRA.

EMN drafts Strategic Research Agenda relating to current metrology needs

EMN Advanced Manufacturing fostered the development of its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) and succeeded in presenting a draft version at a special interest session at the 3DMC conference in November 2022. This allowed the capability gaps for 3D metrology to be assessed by the participants from industry and academia covering a range of key industrial sectors.

After review by the EMN members, the stakeholder council and EURAMET, the document was published in time to underpin potential research topics for the “Metrology for Industry” 2023 call of the European Partnership on Metrology.

The document is currently finalised. The EMN welcomes feedback on the draft SRA, which can be found here >>

EURAMET EMPIR project ‘Multifunctional ultrafast microprobes for on-the-machine measurements’ (17IND05, MicroProbes) developed tactile microbes which can be used to obtain material surface property measurements.

This allows for surface quality monitoring which is essential in the production of materials and surface coatings.

EMPIR project on large scale dimensional measurements sees early uptake

Robust large volume metrology (LVM) is essential for the manufacturing of large volume components that make up complex products, for example for the aerospace and automotive industry.

The EMPIR project ‘Large Volume Metrology Applications’ (17IND03, LaVA) developed a new LVM sensory system which can also be included within manufacturing systems.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

EMN Advanced Manufacturing will hold a training event at the euspen 2023 conference in Copenhagen, Denmark on 12th June 2023. The event will detail the challenges for metrology for advanced manufacturing based on the draft Strategic Research Agenda and findings from stakeholder consultation activities. Further details about the event can be found here.
