Metrology for Energy Gases - Supporting Europe's competitiveness
The European Metrology Network for Energy Gases is a central point of contact for measurement activities supporting the transition towards renewable gaseous fuels. Addressing fundamental challenges to establish renewable gases as a fuel source and energy vector is a vital step in accelerating Europe’s competitiveness.
Annarita Baldan, the EMN Energy Gases Chair, comments: “The EMN for Energy Gases is at the forefront of coordinating metrological research with the aim of addressing the industrial and societal needs in the field. Looking for a measurement service in the field of energy gases?
To boost the dissemination and knowledge transfer of metrological services in the energy gases sector, the EMN developed a freely-available services platform.
The platform advertises all measurement and calibration services, including those developed in the European Metrology Research Programmes.
The services platform aims to support the European and international gas industry, including energy gas producers, gas users, and gas distributors who may need measurement services.

2025 Annual General Meeting and joint project workshop

The European Metrology Network for Energy Gases held a successful Annual General Meeting and a joint project workshop earlier this year.
The three-day event offered thought-provoking presentations, engaging discussions, collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

A review of 2024
|
|
In 2024, the European Metrology Network for Energy Gases played a key role in advancing metrology for energy gases through strategic events and collaboration with other EURAMET bodies and joint research projects.
The year began with the networks contribution to a strategic workshop organised by the European Commission, strengthening collaboration between stakeholders. In May, the final workshop of EMPIR project ‘Metrology for decarbonising the gas grid’ (DECARB) was supported, focusing on decarbonisation strategies. This was followed by the EMN’s contribution to the EURAMET consultation on energy regulation in June.
The second half of the year featured significant technical discussions, with a special focus on hydrogen. This included: The year concluded with a joint brainstorming session for the Metrology Partnership Call 2025 and the publication of an EMN Energy Gases article in the Hungarian Chemist’s Journal, reinforcing its scientific impact.

BFKH, Government Office of the Capital City Budapest
The EMN for Energy Gases highlights its members: this time it is BFKH, the National Metrology Institute of Hungary. The Metrological and Technical Supervisory Department of the Government Office of the Capital City Budapest focuses on various taks in the energy gases area and is working closely with national stakeholders in the field.

Metrology Support for Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (MetCCUS)
|
|
Europe relies on a significant uptake of Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technologies to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. This poses measurement challenges across the whole value chain, for the monitoring of emissions, the quality and composition of CO2, physical properties of CO2, and for gas and liquid flow.
The MetCCUS project, funded under the European Partnership on Metrology, started work in 2022. The project has developed primary reference materials, new gas analysis methods, a materials testing facility, physical property methods and other guidance. This enables CCS operators and CO2 suppliers to determine the conditions and materials (e.g. pipelines) needed to safely deploy CCUS in Europe.

Metrology for green maritime shipping: Emission control through traceable measurements and machine learning approaches (MaritimeMET)
|
|
Maritime shipping represents a significant share of global trade but also contributes to emissions. Transitioning to renewable fuels presents challenges that require robust metrological support. The MaritimeMET project not only facilitates this transition but also creates a framework for applying these advances across related industries such as aviation, rail and power generation.
The MaritimeMET project, funded under the European Partnership on Metrology, started its work in September 2024. This project aims to address the urgent need for emission control and efficient engine optimisation in the maritime shipping sector. It will facilitate the use of alternative fuels like green ammonia, hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and Power-to-X solutions (where renewable energy is turned into something else of value) such as methanol and biomethane.

The next GAS Analysis Symposium & Exhibition takes place from 27 to 29 January 2026 in Paris, France. The call for abstracts is open until Wednesday, 30 July 2025.
