‘School of Physics’ workshop on optical metrology beyond the classical limits

The project

EMPIR project ‘Light-matter interplay for optical metrology beyond the classical spatial resolution limits’ (17FUN01, BeCOMe) is working to develop reliable optical measurement methods that can achieve the high spatial resolutions required to investigate electronic and material structures at the scale of nanometres, required for the advancement of innovative quantum-based technologies.

The project is pushing beyond the confines of classical optical metrology to achieve these sub-wavelength spatial resolutions at sub-nanometre accuracies; by designing metamaterials that can enhance light-matter interactions, exploring the impact of light-matter interplay on topological information, and developing near-field technologies that can characterise optical nanostructure components.

The results of this project will support the development of 4 out of 6 Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) as identified by the European Commission, ensuring that the EU continues to lead the way in nanotechnology, micro-electronics, photonics and advanced materials.

The ‘School of Physics’ at the European Optical Society Annual Meeting (EOSAM)

The next European Optical Society (EOS) Annual Meeting will be taking place from 7 - 11 September 2020 in Porto, Portugal. The EMPIR project will be presenting a ‘School of Physics’ workshop at this event, to outline the importance of their optical measurement methods, and to explain how these tools will enhance the ability of researchers and technology companies to handle matter at the nanoscale.

The project coordinator, Omar El Gawhary, says, “The School of Physics will include talks by project partners, scientists from industry in the semiconductor and advanced imaging sector, and academia. Hence, attendees will have the chance to learn about the main achievements and challenges faced by this strategic research domain from different perspectives, which is something unique”.

There will also be an opportunity to attend other workshops, topical meetings, and industrial exhibitions at the full week-long EOSAM, as well as the chance to meet optics and photonics experts at various evening and social networking events throughout the week.
