New General Secretary for EURAMET

In January 2017, Duncan Jarvis will take on the position of EURAMET's General Secretary.

EURAMET is happy to announce the appointment of Duncan Jarvis as new EURAMET General Secretary. "I am very pleased to inform you that the Board of Directors has appointed Duncan as General Secretary for a period of five years", said Beat Jeckelmann, EURAMET's Chairperson. "Duncan is very well known in our community. He has been the Programme Manager for our research programmes (EMPIR and predecessor EMRP) since 2010. Now that EMPIR is fully operational, he is ready to take on further strategic responsibilities in our association. He has all the prerequisites required for shaping the successful development of EURAMET. We wish Duncan all the best in his new position."

After studying physics at Imperial College, London, Duncan joined the National Physical Laboratory, UK, in 1981 as a scientific officer in the acoustics department. In his PhD, he developed a method for realising the primary standard for sound pressure in air. Between 2000 and 2010 he moved from acoustics to manage other scientific areas at NPL including dimensional metrology, time and electricity, and last held the position as Division Head for Time, Quantum and Electromagnetics.

Duncan has been part of the EURAMET community for more than 20 years, where he started as UK representative for acoustics in EUROMET. In 2010 he took over the position as Programme Manager for EURAMET's EMRP. He is responsible for the implementation of the programmes from organising the calls to final audits. He built up, and leads, the Management Support Unit in Teddington and established all the processes needed for the successful implementation of the programmes. "My aim is to improve the communication across all parts of EURAMET, so we make faster progress in the things we can do better together, and I can represent the full view of the membership to our stakeholders" said Duncan.

Duncan Jarvis will start his new position on 1 January 2017.
