EMRP project IND04 MetroMetal prototype tested in industry

Joint Research Project IND04 - Ionizing Radiation Metrology for Metallurgical Industry (short name: MetroMetal) will produce new reference materials, methods and devices to improve the detection of radioactivity in steelworks.

JRP-Partner CIEMAT produced a prototype detector to measure the radioactivity of different materials used in the metallurgical industry. A team of JRP-Partners collaborated with industrial steelworks company Siderurgia Nacional Seixal, near Lisbon, Portugal, to successfully test the measurement prototype at their industrial site.

Siderurgia Nacional Seixal welcomed the team, provided all the necessary infrastructure and prepared in advance a number of samples from cast steel, slag and fume dust for analysis with the prototype. Additional tests will take place soon at several steel works across Europe using this and a second prototype built at PTB.

This marks an important stage in the availability of SI traceable new reference materials as well as new equipment and technical procedures for the detection and measurement of radioactivity for the metallurgical industry. This will in turn have significant financial impact, due to consistent certification across different companies and countries, and significant environmental impact through the reduction in the risk of accidental irradiation and leaking radioactive material.
