UTC(k) definition point and reference delay measurement strategies

Project Description

TF laboratories apply many different approaches to choose the definition point of UTC(k). It can be defined at an individual 1 pps output or a set of 1 pps outputs of the master clock or of the auxiliary frequency steering generator, at the end of an individual cable transmitting 1 pps signal, or also at the input of the time transfer system. Any approach facilitates some operations and make more difficult others, allows for smaller or larger uncertainties determination, etc. Especially reference delay measurements are very sensitive to a chosen definition point of UTC(k) and can be easier to perform or more complicated, can have lower uncertainties or larger.

The aim of this project is to collect and discuss experiences of EURAMET-TF laboratories within this area, to describe general schemes of every solution, to indicate advantages and disadvantages, to propose explanations and schemes of the relevant crucial operations. Enhanced accuracy and precision of time transfer methods, optical links, etc. require more detailed view and reconsideration of the real local schemes of UTC(k) generation and their consequences. The gathering and discussion of these informations within this project can be very useful for TF community. The proposed project shall investigate:

  • definitions of UTC(k)
  • reference delay measurement
  • steering of the time scale
  • master clock change/ steering equipment change

Proposed work is:

  • survey
  • detailed explanations
  • publication of results
  • report/ guideline
