MacroScale conference series

Project Description

a) Organisation, selection of appropriate conference location, programme planning, execution and wrap-up of the scientific conference series MacroScale on recent developments in traceable dimensional measurements, which takes place at changing venues, preferably in Europe linked to an NMI with EURAMET, but open to alternative locations linked to one of the worldwide NMIs (preferably organised in combination with other metrology meetings (TC-L or CCL WGs). The cycle is about 3 years. The wrap-up activities include the support for publication of selected conference contributions in a special issue of the peer reviewed scientific journal MST or another appropriate peer reviewed journal.
b) Programme committee members of the MacroScale 2014 conference: Alessandro Balsamo, INRIM (I), Rainer Köning, PTB (D), Oelof Kruger, NMISA (ZA), Antti Lassila, MIKES (SF), Andrew Lewis, NPL (GB), Michael Matus, BEV (A), Felix Meli, METAS (CH), José-Antonio Salgado, LNE (F), René Schödel, PTB (D), Jack Stone, NIST (USA), Rudolf Thalmann, METAS (CH), Toshiyuki Takatsuji, AIST (J).
The MacroScale conference series is a follow up of the conference series "Recent Developments in Traceable Dimensional Measurements" which had been organised by SPIE in 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The conference is dedicated on current trends and developments in the field of traceable dimensional measurements.

Progress Report 2019-09-27

The MacroScale conference series deals with ‘Recent Developments in Traceable Dimensional Measurements’. The focus of the MacroScale is on the highest-level length measurements of objects and distances ranging from μm to km in size and on their traceability to the SI unit of length. MacroScale provides a forum for experts and scientists in the area of dimensional metrology for an exchange of information, for discussions and for the transfer of new results to the scientific community.
MacroScale conferences are held every three years at different locations, mainly within Europe. Organization is shared between PTB, acting as continuous support, and a local organizer. Besides the organization teams, the conferences are supported by a scientific committee.

The conference website macroscale.org is hosted at PTB. It deals different purposes:

  • Providing the relevant information on the conference (e.g. call for abstracts, deadlines, registration/payment, travel, conference program, papers)
  • Providing a management system for abstract submission and review
  • Registration system for the conference
  • Participants of a MacroScale conference get online-access to digital libraries containing presentations, posters and photos
  • Providing a platform for MacroScale publications on a permanent basis (DOI) and links to papers published in special issue of the IOP-journal “Measurements Science and Technology”
